Rescuing the Living April 10, 2015 15:43
Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
— Proverbs 24:11
Proverbs 24:11 in the context of abortion is always applied to unborn children. And rightly so. These children comprise an entire population whose voices are completely stifled. Discrimination based on age and place of residence. In this way, Proverbs 24:11 is the clarion call for every Christian to stand up for the innocents, to give them a voice, and to not sit idle as they become casualties of the culture. But think about this: Unborn children shouldn’t be our only focus as we consider this call. So, too, must we consider the ones who take the lives of these children. Aren’t they being led away to death as well?
The culture of death is this abstract concept we talk about. Yet there are key players involved: the politicians, the health care system, compulsory education, the media, and of course, the abortion industry. The list goes on and on. But what are these players actually a part of? Are they conscious of it? Do they understand the price for participating?
Romans 6:23 is clear about the price. It’s death. That should shake us to the core! There are literally thousands of people across this country who are directly participating in the destruction of unborn children and their families and millions more who blindly cheer them on. They’re not just “the other side,” “pro-choice,” or some other label du jour. They are deeply deceived human beings created by God who are being led away to death by their sinful nature. Of course, we all are, until we are willing to receive the gift of Jesus’s sacrifice.
What if the Christian church focused more on rescuing the abortionists? What if we focused on holding back the workers as they stagger toward slaughter? Every former abortion worker describes themselves as profoundly deceived, emotionally disturbed, and deeply tormented by the path they were on. If we can bring the truth in love and shine light into this dark place, we could severely cripple the enemy. There would be few left to carry out his destruction. Perhaps our rescue efforts should point there just as much as they point toward the innocent babies being led away to death. We must not see the abortionists and the workers as the enemy, when in fact, they are the living victims of the culture of death.
