One of the biggest lies put in the path of a woman facing an unexpected or crisis pregnancy, particularly an unmarried woman, is the notion that she’s all alone. That she’s not enough. That no one will be there to help her. Not only do we hear this as we reach out to women on the sidewalk and in the counseling rooms of pregnancy resource centers, but we see it reflected statistically. The reasons women have abortions vary widely, but some of the most frequently cited reasons are:
- Having a baby would dramatically change my life
- I can’t afford a(nother) baby
- I’m having relationship problems
- I just can’t have a child right now
- My partner is pressuring me to abort
- I have to keep my sexual activity a secret
All of these reasons reflect a desire to justify the abortion decision, but below the surface, they reveal a much deeper emotional reality—I’m alone. I’m scared. I’m weak. I’m powerless. I’m abandoned.
Abortion has never and will never empower women. The pro-life movement instinctively knows this. We see it every day, and we’ve been working for decades to try to change it.
This week’s online course clip reminds us that helping women was one of the first efforts of the Christian pro-life movement as abortion was being decriminalized in the 1970s. Bringing hope and help is still a primary focus of the movement today, and it will be a key factor in making abortion unthinkable.
